An Brunswick West family home renovation
We spoke with Nicole, the owner of Nicole a. Iacono Architect, about her recent renovation of a family of 5’s home in Brunswick West, Melbourne. This family home perfectly captures the essence of the original 1920’s home however has been revamped to have a more contemporary and luxurious interior.
Q: Talk us through the project – what condition was the house/room before renovating? Did you have to make any major structural changes?
A: The project involved an extensive interior, non-structural renovation to an existing two storey California Bungalow residence occupied by a family of five. The interior fittings and colours were looking tired and dated and many rooms lacked much needed storage. The owners wanted the Kitchen, Laundry, Powder Room and upstairs Bathroom fully updated and modernised with fresh new joinery, fittings, tiles and increased storage. We also created a better spatial configuration in the Kitchen by closing off a previous door from the Dining room which was inhibiting best use of the space. We created a stunning Library Room in the old Dining space with a full height bookcase spanning across one wall and steel framed doors closing it off from the front Living Room. A fresh new white paint colour was applied to the walls, doors, ceiling and windows reinvigorating each room.
Q: What project manager, tiler & plumber did you use in the project (please include IG social media handles where relevant)
A: The builder for the project was Matt Smyth Building and he used Sean O’Malley @s.o.m_projects_ from SOM Projects as the plumber, and Matt Cullen @matzco tiling from Matzco Tiling.

Q: What is the style of the home now and what’s your favourite feature in it
A: The house is now a cohesive blend of the older 1920 features of the home and the contemporary, luxe style we have created. We have used a neutral colour palette for the tiles, in warm sandy tones while the joinery is both off white colours and oak grains. The taps and accessories are brushed brass which really play well against the sand coloured tiles. It’s hard for me to choose a favourite feature but I love how beautifully the Bathroom and Ensuite have turned out.

Q: What Elegance Store did you buy your tiles from?
A: The tiles were bought from Elegance Tiles in Ascot Vale.
Q: Which tiles did you purchase?
A: The wall and floor tiles in the Bathroom and Ensuite and the floor tiles in the Laundry and Powder Room were ‘Shale Sand Matt’ 300 x 600mm.

Q: What do you love about the new tiles in the bathrooms?
A: I love so much about these tiles! They are the perfect shade I was looking for – neither too beige or brown or too grey. I really wanted to deviate from a ubiquitous grey and white scheme in this project, but didn’t want to hark back to the days of using beige. The tiles also have a natural looking striated grain in a number of different patterns which when put together on a wall or floor, create the natural, organic feel of shale or sandstone. They are perfectly offset with the brushed brass tapware and accessories too.

Q: What colour grout was used?
A: We used Mapei ‘Moon White’.
Q: What other brands/companies did you use in the renovation? Ie Paint, Vanities, Lighting…
A: Dulux paint for the walls, ceiling, trims and doors, Tesrol for the joinery components, ABI Interiors for the tapware and accessories, Beacon Lighting for the new pendants and wall lights.
Q: What was the cost of the project?
A: $80K +
