From 1900’s Edwardian Style to a Modern Farmhouse

The @lifeatsomerset home sits in the quaint rural town of Garfield. Made complete with ducks, goats, cows, llamas and dog Macks, this 1900’s period home renovation is all about maintaining integrity of the farmhouse style with a considered, modernised interior.

We had a chat with Naomi to see how her and husband Adam underwent their bathroom renovation and how they chose tiles which preserved the character and charm of this period farm home.

Q: Talk us through the home – what condition was it before renovating?

A: Our home is Edwardian and was built in the early 1900s. No ensuite existed during that era & one was created many years on.

It was extremely dated and was definitely on top of our renovation list. We were able to retain the hard wood framing in the walls but had the flooring rebuilt to suit the new shower floor.

The ceilings are 10ft high & the existing window was very low which we had lifted much higher to accommodate new mirrors once the ensuite was complete.

These works were completed by a local tiler/tradesman Gary who came recommended by Elegance Tiles Pakenham.

Q: What project manager, tiler and plumber did you use for the project?

A: We managed this renovation ourselves. Our tiler was a local trailer/tradesman highly recommended by Elegance Tiles Pakenham. Plumbing works were completed by Harry from HPL plumbing. Electrical work by Blake from Elecell Electrics.

Q: What is the style of the home now and what’s your favourite feature in it

A: Modern farm house is our style

Q: What Elegance Store did you buy tiles from?

A: Elegance Tiles Pakenham

Q: Which tiles did you purchase?

A: Italian made Look Avio Gloss feature wall and Jakarta White for walls & floors.’

Q: What do you love about the tiles in your new space?

A: We absolutely adore the colour of the Avio gloss feature tile. They give our ensuite the tranquil feel we were after & just the right amount of pop in the herringbone pattern.

The varied mottled colouring is so unique. No two tiles are the same & the tiny flecks of rust throughout tie in beautifully with our brushed brass tapware. The Jakarta white compliment the feature tile & have a lovely stone feel whilst being so easy to keep clean.

Q: What colour grout was used?

A: Light grey but not certain on the exact name.

Q: What other brands/companies did you use in the renovation? Ie Paint, Vanities, Lighting…

A: Tap ware from ABI Interiors. Brushed brass mirrors from Temple & Webster (future glass) Vanity from Plumbing Clearance Centre Narre Warren.

Q: What was the cost of the project?

A: $10-20k

Q: Finally if you have any more information i.e. how long the project was, biggest challenge, history of the home, renovation experience, favourite part etc

A: This is our second bathroom renovation but the first time we have managed a project ourselves. We have learnt a lot along the way, patience being one of them! The biggest challenge was trying to complete this project within a “time frame” during Covid lockdowns. We are still awaiting a few finishing touches but overall we couldn’t be happier. We look forward to starting the next project whilst retaining the character of this beautiful period home.
