From a pool of over 1,500 entrants into the recent global Kitchen Design Contest, Sub-Zero and Wolf, we saw 5 Australian designers thrust to the spotlight as finalists.
The homes submitted to the contest are nothing short of stunning, and while not all of us can afford an architecturally designed home, you can use the awarded designs as a springboard for ideas for your own residence.
‘THE FARM’ BY FERGUS SCOTT ARCHITECTS
If the view doesn’t stop you in your tracks, the kitchen will. ‘The Farm’ is a prefect example of a minimalist, rustic, open plan home.

How do you create this look?
The kitchen island and walls are coated in the same wood finish. To create this in your home, combine a rustic style wood tile with concrete floor tiles. While this home has the luxury of a huge open wall, most homes won’t be this lucky. So use a plain white ceiling to make your space feel larger rather than wood. We recommend our Eco wood tile in Canela – this tile has depth of colour, texture and can be used on both walls and floors. For a concrete floor look, we recommend these Cementina concrete-look tiles in light grey. Juxtapose these natural colours with bold black, matte cabinetry and stainless steel appliances.
‘ABSTRACT HOUSE KITCHEN’ BY MATT GIBSON ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN
When you look at this kitchen space, it screams ‘modern luxe’. Slate flooring, marble slab kitchen island – it’s the perfect mix of dark and light in a contemporary industrial home.

How do you create this look?
While we can’t all afford a giant slab of marble in our kitchens, we can create the look with large marble tiles. We recommend our Portobello Carrara tiles in 600×1200 size. They’re big, bold and perfect for a large island.
For the floor, we would use the Surface grey tile in 300×600 for a clean, cool and even tone.
